Cloud Painter imagines a future Toronto enclosed within a protective bio-dome, shielding the city from environmental devastation. To distract from the bleakness outside, the dome’s interior is lined with projection technology that creates idyllic virtual skyscapes. The installation takes the form of an office belonging to a Cloud Painter, a worker responsible for designing these simulated skies.
Co-created with Joshua Vettivelu, Cloud Painter combines digital simulation and set design to explore labour, technology, and environmental control. A rear-projected city simulation transforms the office windows, while custom furniture, props, and documents build out the fictional workplace through environmental storytelling.
