Soft Cinema Asbestos is a multichannel video installation about the 1949 Quebec Asbestos Strike, a major event in Canadian labour history. The work brings historical footage, documentary material, biomedical imagery, and a video game reenactment into a digitally assembled archive.
Drawing on Lev Manovich’s concept of Soft Cinema, the project uses a sorting algorithm to group clips through shared keywords and assemble them into continuously changing sequences. Presented across two synchronized screens, the work explores how historical events can be reinterpreted through digital archives, automation, pattern, and chance.
